Nona’s Italian Style Bolognese Gluten Free & Vegan "Meat" Balls Recipe

Serve with gluten free pasta or our gluten free YesYouCan Multi Grain Bread Mix
  • 1 X 200gm YesYouCan Falafel and Burger Mix
  • 200ml hot water

Bolognese Base sauce:

  • 180ml Organic tomato puree
  • 2 sprigs lemon thyme chopped fine
  • 2 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 shallot diced fine
  • 20ml olive oil + 50ml to pan fry
  • 30gm mixed cherry tomatoes
  • 10 leaves fresh basil
  • 20gm Vegan cheese – Optional
  • Sea salt flakes & black pepper to taste


  • Combine YesYouCan Falafel and Burger Mixand hot water in a bowl
  • Mix well and let set for 10-15 minutes
  • Roll into medium size 25gm balls with the palm of your hands.
  • If they stick add oil to your hands before shaping
  • Pre-heat 50ml olive oil in a wide frypan to a medium heat temperature using enough oil to allow the meet balls get a pleasant light brown colour
  • In a second pan add 20ml oil, garlic, shallots, lemon thyme and cook in low to medium heat. This is also known as soffritto, the base to all good Italian sauces.
  • Add the tomato puree and cook for 20 mins on low heat.
  • Add cherry tomatoes and the semi fried meet balls.
  • Gently simmer for 5 more mins
  • Add sea salt flakes, cheese, fresh black pepper and basil leaves
